  • Am I eligible to join a Newborn Cohort? Who can join?
Check out our Cohorts page here for lots of information! Our newborn cohorts are designed for parents of newborns*; we've also had some expecting parents participate, but we recommend waiting to join a Cohort until your baby/babies have made their appearance! Expecting parents are encouraged to join our Pregnant Peanuts WhatsApp - we provide the join link to new members upon sign up! So is Peanuts moms-only?! NOPE! If you're a mom, a dad, an adoptive parent, or a caregiver of any kind for a newborn, you're the right fit for a Peanuts newborn cohort! To join, just click here, pay the one-time cohort fee per family, and you'll be contacted by a Cohort Facilitator with next steps! Note that your cohort fee includes 3 months of discussion sessions and in-person meet ups, plus your regular annual Peanuts dues through Fall. Woohoo! * Note that we do not impose any age limits on our newborn cohorts! If your child is 6+ months old but the Cohort content is still of interest to you, please feel free to join! What if you don't have a newborn but want to get involved? Parents of infants and children up to ~5 years old are also welcome to become sustaining annual members of Peanuts! In fact, these members are the majority of our membership, and dues are just $35 per family. Peanuts cohort and sustaining members both get exclusive access to members-only events and offerings, like our famous Peanuts Spring Eggstravaganza, the Mother's Day brunch, monthly happy hours / guest speakers, and much more. You can join as a Sustaining Member here!

  • My child is a toddler. Can I still be a Peanuts member without joining a newborn cohort?
Absolutely! Many of our most active members joined Petworth Peanuts after their child/children outgrew the newborn cohort content. Non-cohort caregivers are encouraged to join as Sustaining Members, meaning they pay the same annual dues that Cohort "alums" pay to become full-fledged Peanuts, and thus gain the same access to all of our members-only events and resources. Membership dues are collected in September/October each year.

  • What does it mean to be an “Annual Sustaining Member”?
If you don't have a newborn and/or your child is older than 0-6ish months*, you can still participate in Peanuts! The vast majority of our members are annual dues-paying "sustaining members" - meaning that they get exclusive access to private Peanuts members-only events (like the Easter Egg Hunt, Mother's Day Brunch, monthly happy hours and guest speaker sessions) and resources like our resource database and private mailing list/listserv, etc. Dues are just $50 per family and are used to support Peanuts programming. All parents are welcomed to join Peanuts, though in general Peanuts programming is designed for Parents of young children up to approximately five (5) years of age.

  • Why does Peanuts have a "membership year" from Oct - Sept?
Petworth Peanuts membership runs from October 1st through September 30th of the following year (ie, Oct 1, 2024 through Sept 30, 2025), mirroring the federal fiscal year. Membership can be purchased at any time throughout the year, but must be renewed each September/October. Why!? A few reasons: The reliable bump in revenue from membership renewals allows us to better plan for the Fall event season and is a predictable source of income Advertising renewals can happen at the same time every year, so there is no need to constantly pester members to pay dues throughout the year Financial reporting, annual member surveys, and budgeting can happen in line with the fiscal year We can more easily control access to member resources, including the WhatsApp broadcast channel, if members are in clear annual cohorts (instead of joining on a rolling basis) We completely understand that this may be a source of frustration for members who join late in the year - but we hope the extremely accessible pricing helps justify this approach, no matter when our member families join. Plus, families can request a fee waiver at any time for any reason, just email hello@petworthpeanuts.com. In 2024-2025, we will also be introducing a discounted rate approximately halfway through the member year.

  • I don't live in Petworth, can I join?
We welcome all parents and caregivers, not just those who live in Greater Petworth. The caveat is that most of our programming is based in and around Petworth - so some commuting may be necessary to fully participate in the Peanuts experience. That said, much of our programming can be enjoyed virtually, including the Cohort speaker sessions and the Continuing Education Speaker sessions. Members are also welcomed to plan meet ups in their own neighborhoods if fellow Peanuts are interested / live nearby.

  • I'm joining the July, August, or September cohort, do I also have to pay annual dues in September?
Our membership year renews September 30, but July, August, and September newborn cohort members are grandfathered into the subsequent membership year. All other Newborn Cohort members (October 2023 - June 2024) will need to pay dues AFTER their cohort experience to remain active members of Peanuts for the 2024-2025 year. Cohort fees and annual dues are designed to be accessible, and 100% of all member fees go directly to running the Peanuts organization - but cohort members can be grandfathered in to the new member year upon request / fee waivers are always available if requested, no questions asked.

  • How are the fees/dues used? Can I get a fee waiver?
Peanuts is dedicated to fiscal responsibility and full financial transparency. Our Peanuts Board has established financial management structures and processes that guarantee the appropriate use of all revenue, including grants, donations and member fees. Our amazing treasurer works closely with the Board to prepare/oversee detailed event and operations budgets, and to reconcile every expenditure. Financial reports are presented at monthly Board meetings and expenditure authorizations require multiple signatories at various thresholds. We take our financial management very seriously, even though our total operating budget is actually rather small. To answer your question, member fees and dues are usually budgeted to cover the following: event costs not otherwise included in grants/sponsorships website hosting fees/domain costs 501c3 reporting expenses Community service initiatives, like food for volunteers at the Mother's Day Market Cohort expenses, like small stipends for meet ups, and member perks and benefits, like Peanuts Family Field Day entertainment, etc. Note that the Peanuts Board and Committee members all donate their time on a 100% volunteer basis. Can I get a waiver for the Cohort fee / annual dues? We want Peanuts membership to be attainable for anyone and everyone interested in joining. If you'd like to request a fee waiver, just email hello@petworthpeanuts.com.

  • I was in a Cohort awhile ago, do I still have to pay the dues?
Yes, all members will need to pay annual dues each year to remain active in the organization, which includes access to members-only events, resources, and the mailing list. This includes members who were previously in cohorts as well as our many wonderful members who never participated in cohorts and/or joined after their child or children were beyond the newborn stage. Members who choose not to pay the dues will become inactive - but we hope you agree that the annual fee is an awesome deal! Dues will be collected each September/October and will help us to sustain our programming and increase our service contributions to the Greater Petworth community. If you have questions about dues, and/or would like to request a fee waiver, please don't hesitate to contact hello@petworthpeanuts.com.

  • How did Peanuts start? How many members do you have?
Petworth Peanuts is a 100% volunteer-based parent support organization that connects and supports Petworth-area caregivers of young children (newborn to ~5 years of age). Peanuts was created in March 2020 by two new moms who identified a real need for post-partum support and connection. "Cohort 1" began with approximately 15 women and included weekly zoom sessions with subject area experts, including lactation consultants, pelvic floor therapists, yoga instructors, baby sign language specialists, and more. Recognizing the demand and potential for a caregivers' support organization in the Greater Petworth community, Peanuts began meeting in-person (outdoors) and hosting free community events to expand the organization's scope and impact. Peanuts also grew its membership to include dads, adoptive parents, and all caregivers of babies and toddlers. As of Fall 2024, Peanuts has directly supported over 4,000 families in the Newborn Cohort program and beyond, and over 15,000+ area residents have enjoyed our FREE community events, including the Sherman Circle Spooktacular, annual Costume Exchange / Outdoor Movie, Petworth Arts Fest / Teddy Bear Picnic, and the Miracle on Upshur Holiday events. Peanuts continues to experience exponential growth and we're so excited to continue to expand our caregiver and community impact!

Peanuts continues to experience exponential growth and we're so excited to continue to expand our caregiver and community impact!
• Do you have volunteer opportunities?
Ohhh yes! We are always looking for volunteers to support Peanuts events and initiatives. At the moment, we are recruiting active members for the following committees: Cohort Leader: the super fun job of supporting your newborn cohort by organizing in-person meet ups and introducing weekly speakers (note: speakers are fully organized/scheduled by the Peanuts Membership Development chair - so this is not required of Cohort Leaders!) Major Events Committee: plans the large-scale community events for which Peanuts has become so famous, like the Sherman Circle Spooktacular! Community Service Committee: Identifies and organizes community service and relations opportunities, including the holiday toy drive, volunteer opportunities, and service components of larger events Internal Events Committee: Plans our awesome members-only events, like "Mama's Meet Up" happy hours, private family portraits, excursions to the pumpkin patch, etc. Committee on Community, Equity, and Belonging: a brand new initiative with the broad and important goals of sharing our resources with the broader Petworth community of parents, fostering belonging and inclusivity at our events, and establishing some shared values for Peanuts The Future of Peanuts / Governance Working Group: support the Board in preparing our 501c3 application, reviewing standard operating procedures, and ensuring a strong and transparent operating foundation upon which the organization will continue to grow. Non-profit management experience a plus! Want to support a specific event/initiative? Got a special skill? We'd love to work with you! If you're a graphic designer, artist, non-profit attorney, photographer, children's entertainer (ie singer, balloon artist, face painter), etc. - or if you're just keen to be a "floater" volunteer at one of our events, email hello@petworthpeanuts.com for more information about how to get involved.

  • Why did Peanuts become a 501c3?
Peanuts officially became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Fall 2023! There are several reasons we pursued this designation, but mainly: It gives us the ability to accept contributions and donations that are tax-deductible to the donor (a big plus for our amazing sponsors); It makes Peanuts a legitimate legal entity in its own right that is separate from its founders/leaders, meaning the organization will have significantly greater structure and shared control but also more limited liability for/dependence upon its members/officers; It will exempt us from federal and/or state corporate income taxes, which means our revenue will go directly to our members and our programming instead; and It makes us eligible for grants and other public or private allocations available only to IRS-recognized, 501(c)(3) organizations. In short, becoming a 501c3 allows Peanuts to continue its extraordinary growth in a more sustainable way!
